What does the car dashboard show an exclamation mark mean

2025-02-13

There are a variety of situations in which a car instrument displays an exclamation mark. Here are some common meanings:

Braking system failure

Red exclamation mark (the middle of the circle exclamation mark): This usually indicates a serious problem with the braking system. It may be that the brake fluid level is too low. This light will be turned on when the brake liquid is below the minimum scale due to leakage or loss after long-term use. For example, the brake line is damaged and the brake fluid leakage occurs, which will cause insufficient brake pressure and seriously affect the brake effect.

Yellow exclamation mark (with exclamation marks in parentheses): Some vehicles use this symbol to indicate that the brake pads are worn enough to require replacement. When the thickness of the brake pad is close to the minimum, the emergency warning lamp will be lit to remind the owner to replace the brake pad in time to ensure the brake performance.

Tire pressure monitoring system alarm

Yellow exclamation mark (intermedial exclamation mark in the shape of the tire): If the vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, this light is likely to be a sign of an abnormal tire pressure. It could be that the tire has been pinned, causing the air pressure to drop rapidly, or that the tire air pressure has not been checked for a long time, causing it to be too high or too low. For example, in the event of a sudden change in temperature, the tire air pressure will change, and if it is below or above the normal tire pressure range set by the vehicle, the dashboard will warn.

Steering system failure

Yellow exclamation marks (the middle of the steering wheel shape with an exclamation mark): This could be a problem with the steering assist system. This emergency warning lamp appears on the instrument if there is a malfunction in the electric power steering system, such as sensor failure, motor failure, or circuit failure, which can cause the steering power to weaken or disappear.

Vehicle stability control system failure

Yellow exclamation mark (median exclamation mark for vehicle sliding signs): This light may be turned on when the vehicle's electronic stability control system (ESC), body stability control systems (VSC), etc. fail to function properly. For example, when driving on slippery roads, if the system sensors fail and cannot effectively control the vehicle's posture, the light will alert the driver of an abnormal system.

Other system failures

In some vehicles, there may also be other less common system failures that cause the exclamation mark to appear, such as transmission failure, adaptive cruise system failure, etc. These systems generally have their own independent failure prompting, but in some cases they may also alert the driver in the form of an exclamation mark that the vehicle has a problem and needs to be checked for repair in time.

If the car shows an exclamation mark, you'd better read the manual carefully to determine which system is wrong, or send the car to a professional vehicle maintenance and repair shop to have it checked as soon as possible.
