Role of idle control valve
2024-12-05
Stabilize idle speed When the engine is idling, the throttle valve is closed. At this time, the idle control valve keeps the idle speed of the engine stable by adjusting the amount of air entering the engine. For example, when the engine is disturbed by external factors, such as electrical equipment (such as air conditioning compressors, radios, etc.) is turned on or off, the load on the engine will change. Without the adjustment of the idle control valve, large fluctuations in engine idle speed may occur. The idle control valve can automatically adjust the intake air amount according to changes in engine load so that the idle speed of the engine can be stabilized within the set range.
To achieve the fast idle function, when the engine is started cold, the engine needs to be warmed up quickly to reach the normal operating temperature. At this time, the idle control valve will cause the engine to run at a speed higher than normal idle speed, that is, fast idle speed. This is because when the engine is cold, The atomization effect of fuel is poor and the combustion efficiency is low. By increasing the amount of intake air and increasing the engine speed, the fuel injected by the fuel injection system can be better mixed with air, thereby improving the combustion process, and also allowing the engine to reach normal operating temperature faster. For example, in cold weather, when the engine is just started, the idle control valve will increase the engine idle speed to about 1000 - 1500r/min. The specific speed varies depending on factors such as engine model.
Reduce emissions
Stable idle speed helps to fully burn fuel. When the idle speed control valve is working normally and the engine idle speed is stable, the fuel injection system can more accurately control the injection amount, so that the mixing ratio of fuel and air is close to the ideal state. This reduces the formation of incomplete combustion products, such as emissions of harmful gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). If the idle speed is unstable, the fuel injection amount and the intake air amount cannot be well matched, which will lead to insufficient combustion and increase harmful gas emissions.
Improve driving comfort
From the perspective of driving experience, stable idle speed can reduce vehicle vibration. When the engine is idling steadily, the driver and passengers can hardly feel the engine shake under idle conditions such as parking and waiting, providing a relatively quiet and comfortable driving and riding environment. If the idle control valve fails, the engine will shake severely at idle speed, which will greatly affect driving and riding comfort.
