How to inspect the throttle position sensor

2024-12-19

An intuitive inspection

It is mainly seen with eyes and touched with hands. Check the wire harness connector of the sensor for damage, looseness, or poor contact. Feel the connection wire harness between the sensor and the ECM for damage, fracture, or poor contact. In addition, when the engine is running, gently shake the throttle position sensor wire plug, if the engine is running suddenly changes, such as shaking, etc., that throttle position sensor wire harness plug contact is not good.

Use of on-board diagnostic systems

Use diagnostic equipment to check the fault code stored in the ECM. If there is a fault code, there may be a problem with the throttle position sensor.

Read data flow

Use diagnostic instruments to read the engine control system data, and check the throttle position sensor opening, voltage, throttle position and other parameters, if these parameters do not meet the specified value, indicating that the sensor is wrong.

Detect the power supply voltage

Unplug the connector plug on the throttle position sensor, place the ignition switch in the "ON" position, and measure the voltage between the wire harness side of the sensor and the ground rail with the high-impedance digital multimeter voltage shifter. The voltage should be about 5V.

Detecting resistance values and continuity

Switch: Put the ignition switch in the "OFF" position, unplug the fuel rack position sensor, and measure the on-off of the idle and full load contacts with the multimeter resistor. When the throttle door is fully closed, the idle speed touch should be activated; When the throttle door is fully open or nearly fully open, the full load touch point should be enabled; At other degrees, neither touch point should be deductive.

Sliding resistance and integrated mode: Unplug the TPS plug, measure the resistance value with a multimeter, connect and slowly change the opening of the throttle door. The resulting resistance should continue to increase with the opening of this door, without a mutation occurring in the middle.

Detection of output voltage

Plug in the transmitter plug, put the ignition switch in the "ON" position, and measure the voltage of the transmitter output terminal with the high-impedance digital multimeter voltage block. When the throttle is completely closed, the voltage should be about 0.5V. When the throttle slowly opens, the voltage should change smoothly between 0.5-4.2V.

The news is about how to detect the throttle position sensor. If you encounter a problem where you can't judge the cause of the fault well, you need to find a professional to fix and solve it.
